The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.
