The New Mayor Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Address
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
